El camino al Camino
Seguramente han visto esos grandes rótulos verdes que ponen en las carreteras, los cuales nos apuntan en la dirección correcta a seguir para llegar a nuestro destino; por ejemplo, si vienen de la zona de Carazo, Nic. por la Carretera Sur hacia la Capital, al llegar al empalme de la Carretera Sur con la Carretera a León, se ve uno de esos rótulos verdes con una flecha recta que apunta y esta rotulada hacia Managua, esta otra flecha que indica hacia la izquierda marcada “León”; de manera que aunque ud. no sea de por aquí, con sólo seguir los rótulos, llegará a su meta sin ningún problema.
(Lucas 1:39) En aquellos días, María partió y fue sin demora a un pueblo de la montaña de Judá. (40) Entró en la casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel. Apenas esta oyó el saludo de María, el niño saltó de alegría en su seno, e Isabel, llena del Espíritu Santo, (42) exclamó: «¡Tú eres bendita entre todas las mujeres y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre! (43) ¿Quién soy yo, para que la madre de mi Señor venga a visitarme? (44) Apenas oí tu saludo, el niño saltó de alegría en mi seno. (45) Feliz de ti por haber creído que se cumplirá lo que te fue anunciado de parte del Señor».
(Juan 2:5) Pero su madre dijo a los sirvientes: «Hagan todo lo que él les diga».
Sabemos que el camino al Padre es por medio de Jesús, y que el camino a Jesús es por medio del Espíritu Santo y de la Virgen María; La santa Virgen dijo “sí” al llamado de Dios, y el Espíritu Santo la cubrió con su sombra, de la misma forma que un rayo de luz atraviesa el vidrio de una ventana, la luz llega a la habitación sin dañar el cristal de la ventana; y María concibió, siendo todavía Virgen.
A como podemos ver, necesitamos saber como llegar al camino correcto y después seguirlo; María quien estaba en cinta con el Hijo del Hombre, Jesús de Nazareth, va a visitar a su prima Isabel, y de esta forma lleva al bebé Jesús a la presencia de su predecesor, Juan el Bautista, quien inmediatamente lo reconoció y salto de alegría; para Isabel y Juan el Bautista, María es el camino a Jesús, y lo es también para nosotros.
(Juan 1:29) Al siguiente día Juan vio a Jesús caminando hacia él y dijo: “Vean, he ahí el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo.”
En la visitación, María tuvo la opción de decir no, a la propuesta del ángel Gabriel, ella pudo haber dicho por ejemplo: de que estaba pensando en una carrera en “administrasión de empresas”, y que sus planes ahora no eran el de ponerse a tener muchachos; o que pensaba ser actriz, o que todavía no estaba preparada para el 'príncipe azul', pero sin embargo, la adolescente Judía decidió ser parte del plan de Dios de salvación para la humanidad. Pero porqué María tomó esa decisión?
Supongamos por ejemplo, de que existe una muchacha nacida de una familia humilde de un pueblo provincial como Nagarote, Nicaragua; esta señorita ha estudiado tecnología
de computadoras con maestría en programación; después, un día recibe una oferta de trabajo directamente del presidente de la corporación Microsoft, quien le dice seria un honor para ellos de que ella acepte su oferta para formar parte del equipo que está desarrollando, la próxima gran revolución en programas operacionales de computadoras.Estoy seguro de que la muchacha estará encantada y hasta le ha dicho a su novio (si es que tiene novio) de que tendrá que esperarla por un largo tiempo, o que mejor se busque otra novia, porque ella aceptará esta oferta de trabajo, que es el sueño de su vida. Yo apostaría a que esta joven se siente feliz y honrada de que el presidente de Microsoft le haya hecho semejante oferta. ¿Creen que exagero? ¿No seria la reacción de la muchacha, lo esperado de una joven científica?
No dudo que cualquier joven inteligente y con ambición, desearía le sucediera algo parecido. Y si es tanto honor recibir una oferta como esta, de apenas un hombre mortal, no creen que seria algo infinitamente mejor el recibir una propuesta del Dios altísimo?
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, déjenme decirles que María era ya una muchacha humilde y bien portada, cuando vio al ángel, probablemente se quedó asombrada, pero, el ángel no estaba ahí para asustar a María, y lo mas probable es que se dirigió a ella en un tono de voz, suave, dulce, respetuoso y alentador, que hizo que la joven Hebrea se sintiese cómoda y relajada ante la impresionante presencia del hombre de Dios. María debió sentirse mas humilde aun ante tal persona, y la clase de petición hecha por San Gabriel. Y a como sabemos, María aceptó la oferta poniendo mucha fe en las palabras del ángel de Dios.
(Efesios 1:16) No ceso de dar gracias por uds. recordándoles en mis oraciones; para que el Dios de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, les conceda el espíritu de sabiduría y de revelación para que le conozcan perfectamente.
De manera que la moraleja de la historia es, que para tomar el camino correcto, necesitamos de que alguien nos lo señale, y tanto el Espíritu Santo a como la Virgen María hacen eso por nosotros; María es el ejemplo de una verdadera hija de Dios, como ser humano, no hay nadie como María en su actitud, virtud y dedicación al servicio de Dios. El Espíritu Santo nos dará la luz y los talentos necesarios para que podamos reflejar a Jesús con nuestra vida, de forma similar a como lo hizo María con la suya.
(Hechos 2:1) Al llegar el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos reunidos en el mismo lugar. (2) De pronto, vino del cielo un ruido, semejante a una fuerte ráfaga de viento, que resonó en toda la casa donde se encontraban.
(3) Entonces vieron aparecer unas lenguas como de fuego, que descendieron por separado sobre cada uno de ellos. (4) Todos quedaron llenos del Espíritu Santo, y comenzaron a hablar en distintas lenguas, según el Espíritu les permitía expresarse.
Dios ve nuestras limitaciones, sin embargo por el amor tan grande que nos tiene no toma en cuenta nuestra debilidad, sino que nos provee con el regalo del Espíritu Santo, para ayudarnos a encontrarnos con él. Nos reviste con cualidades celestiales que hacen nuestra alma sensible y receptiva a su orientación. Eleva nuestra cualidades naturales a un nivel superior, para que tengamos la docilidad necesaria y respondamos a las incitaciones del Espíritu.
¿Con cuántos dones nos provee el Espíritu? Para encontrar la lista completa leamos (esta es su tarea del día de hoy), (Isaías 11:2-3); (1Corintios 12:8-10); (Efesios 4:7-13) y (Romanos 12:3-8); estos son los dones necesarios para la construcción y la vida de la Iglesia que nos proveen con la energía, auto-entrega a Dios y la fuerza que nos hacen responder correctamente a la inspiración divina.
(Isaias 11:2) Sobre él reposará el Espíritu de Yavé, espíritu de sabiduría e inteligencia espíritu de prudencia y valentía, espíritu para conocer a Yavé y para respetarlo, y para gobernar según sus preceptos. (3) No juzgará por las apariencias ni se decidirá por lo que se dice, (4) sino que hará justicia a los débiles y defenderá el derecho de los pobres del país. Su palabra derribará al opresor, el soplo de sus labios matará al malvado.
Santo Tomas de Aquino nos define los dones presentados por (Isaias 11:2) de la siguiente manera:
Sabiduría: Nos permite ver a Dios actuando en nuestras vidas y en la historia; para la persona que tiene sabiduría, las maravillas de la naturaleza, los eventos históricos y los alti-bajos que sufrimos toman un significado mas profundo. La Sabiduría nos hace ver a Dios como nuestro Padre y considerar la dignidad de los hermanos. Pero sobre todo aprendemos a cumplir la voluntad de Dios.
Entendimiento: Nos enseña a comprender cómo debemos vivir como seguidores de Cristo que somos. La persona que posee el don del Entendimiento, no es confundida por los mensajes conflictivos de nuestra cultura sobre cómo debemos de vivir hoy. El Entendimiento perfecciona la capacidad de razonar especulativamente la verdad y comprenderla mejor. Por medio de este don, los principios auto-evidentes se reconocen de mejor forma y con facilidad.
Consejería(Buen Juicio): El don de Consejo/Buen Juicio, nos hace reconocer la diferencia entre lo bueno y lo malo y a optar por lo que es justo y correcto. La persona que posee este don, evita el pecado en su vida y es guiada por los valores que nos enseñó nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Este es el don de la verdad que permite al individuo a responder siempre con prudencia, y cree con gozo de que Jesús es el Señor.
Fortaleza (Coraje,Valor): Con el don de Fortaleza vencemos nuestros miedos y resueltamente estamos dispuestos a tomar riesgos como seguidores de Cristo. La persona que posee el don de Fortaleza, está siempre dispuesta a defender lo que es correcto y justo a la vista de Dios, aun cuando signifique aceptar rechazos, abusos verbales o físicos, o hasta morir. El don del Valor provee a las personas con firmeza mental y carácter fuerte, necesarios para hacer el bien y confrontar el mal, especialmente en situaciones peligrosas, a como lo hicieron todos los mártires.
Conocimiento: Este don nos permite entender el significado de la persona de Dios; este don es mas que una mera acumulación de datos y hechos de conocimiento.
Piedad (Reverencia): Con el don de la Reverencia, también llamada Piedad, tendremos un profundo sentido de respeto a Dios y a la Iglesia. La persona que posee el don de Piedad, reconoce su dependencia total en Dios, y siempre se acerca al Señor con humildad, confianza y amor. Este don nos hace responder a las instigaciones del Espíritu en adoración y deber a Dios.
Temor a Dios (Sentido de Asombro y Maravilla): Este don nos hace conscientes de la gloria y majestuosidad de Dios. Una persona con el “Sentido de Asombro y Maravilla” sabe que Dios es la perfección que todos deseamos: perfecto conocimiento, perfecta bondad, perfecto poder y perfecto amor. Este don es el temor a ser separado de Dios, o sea que es un “temor filial”, como el temor de un niño de ofender a su padre, mas que un “temor de servidumbre” o sea nada mas miedo al ser castigado. Este don nos hace saber que Dios es todopoderoso. (Proverbios 1:7) “El temor a Dios es el principio de la Sabiduría.” Porque pone nuestra mente en su relación correcta con Dios, nosotros somos seres finitos, criaturas dependientes, y él es el infinito, el Creador todopoderoso.
¿Para que mas nos sirven los dones del Espíritu?
A como ya les dije antes, María y el Espíritu Santo son las dos flechas mas grandes apuntando hacia Jesús, y la razón por la que les llamo, las flechas mas grandes es, porque todos los santos, también nos apuntan al Señor.
(1Corintios 12:2) Ustedes saben que cuando todavía eran paganos, se dejaban arrastrar ciegamente al culto de dioses inanimados. (3) Por eso les aseguro que nadie, movido por el Espíritu de Dios, puede decir: «Maldito sea Jesús». Y nadie puede decir: «Jesús es el Señor», si no está impulsado por el Espíritu Santo.
Para poder reconocer a Jesús como el Señor, debemos de tener el Espíritu Santo en nuestra alma; nadie que niegue que el Espíritu Santo es Dios, puede llamarse Cristiano.
San Pablo nos advierte que nuestra presente lucha en la vida es contra fuerzas espirituales, y que debemos de estar propiamente entrenados y preparados para poder ganar, de lo contrario seremos victimas o esclavos de amos brutales que no tendrán ninguna consideración por nosotros o nuestras almas.
(Efesios 6:12) Porque nuestra lucha no es contra enemigos de carne y sangre, sino contra los Principados y Potestades, contra los Soberanos de este mundo de tinieblas, contra los espíritus del mal que habitan en el espacio.
El sacramento de Confirmación
El sacramento de Confirmación nos transforma en soldados de Cristo, y como soldados estamos comprometidos a vivir una vida disciplinada y bien organizada; se requiere que vivamos con sobriedad y siempre listos a hacernos responsables de nuestras responsabilidades y obligaciones hacia nuestro comandante en jefe, el Señor Jesús, y mantener nuestra lealtad a nuestra hermandad que es la Iglesia.
¿Cómo logra esto la Confirmación?
Esto se logra porque por medio de la Confirmación, los bautizados están mas unidos a la Iglesia y enriquecidos por los dones del Espíritu Santo. Por lo tanto, como testigos de Cristo, estamos estrictamente obligados a expandir (predicar) y defender la fe por medio de hechos y palabra.
¿Cómo es que somos soldados de Cristo?
De nuevo, en las cartas de San Pablo vemos la referencia a la palabra 'soldado', como analogía a las batallas que confrontamos en la vida, batallas que son reales y si no, nada mas lee el diario local o ve las noticias en la TV y te darás cuenta que tenemos una tremenda tarea delante de nosotros; debemos de preparar a nuestros
hijos antes de que salgan a enfrentar la cultura actual, la cual se torna cada día mas hostil contra la Cristiandad; una cultura en la cual los valores Cristianos son mofados y las virtudes devaluadas. Debemos de mantenernos unidos y soportarnos los unos a los otros, entrenar a los jóvenes en la doctrina Católica, para que sus mentes y almas no sean fácilmente conquistadas por filosofías e ideologías malignas y diabólicas.(Filipenses 2:25) Considero necesario enviar a Epafrodito de regreso a uds. él es mi hermano, compañero de trabajo y 'soldado'; quien es también su mensajero que uds. enviaron a ayudarme en mis necesidades.
(Filemon 1:2) A la hermana Apfia, a nuestro compañero 'soldado', Arquipo, y a la Iglesia de tu casa.
Todos aquellos que han sido soldados saben, que cuando el pelotón se encuentra en el teatro de operación (la guerra), la seguridad de cada soldado depende del amparo, soporte, cooperación y participación de cada uno de los otros soldados del pelotón; en otras palabras todos ellos operan y viven como una unidad. Así nosotros los Católicos debemos de vivir en comunión en el Cuerpo de Cristo, nosotros somos el ejército de nuestro Redentor.
(Apocalipsis 19:11) Entonces vi el cielo abierto, y había un caballo blanco: el que lo monta se llama Fiel y Veraz; y juzga y combate con justicia. ,(12) Sus ojos, llama de fuego; sobre su cabeza, muchas diademas; lleva escrito un nombre que sólo él conoce; ,(13) viste un manto empapado en sangre y su nombre es: La Palabra de Dios.
(14) Y los ejércitos del cielo, vestidos de lino blanco puro, le seguían sobre caballos blancos. (15) De su boca sale una espada afilada para herir con ella a los paganos; él los regirá con cetro de hierro; él pisa el lagar del vino de la furiosa cólera de Dios, el Todopoderoso. (16) Lleva escrito un nombre en su manto y en su muslo: Rey de Reyes y Señor de Señores.
El Señor Jesús es además de "Rey de reyes", y "Señor de señores", el único General de todos los hombres y mujeres verdaderamente libres del mundo.
(2Timoteo 2:3) Soporta las fatigas conmigo, como un buen 'soldado' de Cristo Jesús. (4) Nadie que se dedica a la milicia se enreda en los negocios de la vida, si quiere complacer al que le ha alistado. (5) Y lo mismo el atleta; no recibe la corona si no ha competido según el reglamento. (6) Y el labrador que trabaja es el primero que tiene derecho a percibir los frutos. (7) Entiende lo que quiero decirte, pues el Señor te dará la inteligencia de todo.
Un buen soldado vive para obedecer a su oficial comandante, mientras es parte del ejercito, no puede abandonar su cuartel, o participar en cualquier otra actividad fuera del servicio que no sea algo relacionado a su vida como enlistado; así, un Católico casado, no puede andar en los bares con sus amigos y dejar a su familia abandonada, tampoco puede andar de Don Juan con otras mujeres, él le debe fidelidad a su esposa y su tiempo libre o de ocio, pertenece a sus actividades familiares.
¿Cual es la forma del sacramento de Confirmación?
Antes de recibir Confirmación, el candidato debe haberse confesado. Durante el acto de Confirmación el Obispo o sacerdote celebrante impone sus manos sobre el 'confirmante' lo cual significa el descenso del Espíritu Santo sobre el 'confirmante', después esta persona es ungida con el aceite perfumado llamado “Crisma”, el cual ha sido bendecido por el (un) Obispo; el celebrante pronuncia las palabras: “Que seas sellado con el don del Espíritu Santo” (esta es la parte central de la ceremonia) . Este sello es una consagración, la cual representa, una salvaguarda del Espíritu Santo de las gracias conferidas durante el Bautismo.
¿Quién es elegible para la Confirmación?
Toda persona que ha sido bautizada es elegible para la Confirmación, aunque la Iglesia en algunos lugares sugiere recibir la Confirmación hasta la edad de la razón (cerca de 7 años de edad), puede recibirse en cualquier momento. (Un niño en peligro de muerte debe de ser Confirmado.)
¿Cómo es que yo fui “confirmado” siendo un bebé al mismo tiempo de mi bautismo?
Recuerden que no hace mucho tiempo, la mortalidad infantil era muy alta, especialmente en los países tercermundistas, por esa razón la Iglesia bautiza y confirma infantes (bebés) a un mismo tiempo.
¿Dónde aparece en la Biblia el sacramento de la Confirmación?
Recordemos primero que antes de Pentecostés, el Señor ya había exhalado su Espíritu sobre los apóstoles, (Juan 20:21) Los discípulos se alegraron de ver al Señor. (21) Jesús les dijo otra vez: La paz con vosotros. Como el Padre me envió, también yo os envío. (22) Dicho esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: Recibid el Espíritu Santo. (23) A quienes perdonéis los pecados, les quedan perdonados; a quienes se los retengáis, les quedan retenidos.
Confirmando lo dicho por San Juan el Bautista, de que “aquel” que venia detrás de él, nos bautizaría con el fuego y el Espíritu. Después en el día de Pentecostés leemos:
(Hechos 2:1) Al llegar el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos reunidos en un mismo lugar. (2) De repente vino del cielo un ruido como el de una ráfaga de viento impetuoso, que llenó toda la casa en la que se encontraban. (3) Se les aparecieron unas lenguas como de fuego que se repartieron y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos; (4) quedaron todos llenos del Espíritu Santo y se pusieron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu les concedía expresarse. (5) Había en Jerusalén hombres piadosos, que allí residían, venidos de todas las naciones que hay bajo el cielo.
Ahora, el Espíritu llega a inaugurar la Iglesia, y por favor no se confundan, pues el Señor estableció la Iglesia es decir escogió su personal de antemano a Pentecostés, pero hasta hoy comienza a funcionar como una institución o corporación manejada por Pedro y compañia; hoy se confirman los dones sobre la comunidad Cristiana, la cual ya ha madurado y pasado por muchas pruebas en las que hubo (y seguirán habiendo) triunfos y fracasos, sin embargo nuestro Señor nos alienta y nos promete estar con nosotros hasta el fin; ahora su Espíritu Santo nos guiará y aconsejará de qué es lo que tenemos que hacer. En nuestro Bautismo se nos encendió el fuego de vida en nuestra alma, la llama del amor, ahora llega el momento de meterle mas leña al fuego, para que se encienda el mundo entero.
(Hechos 19:4) Pablo añadió: Juan bautizó con un bautismo de conversión, diciendo al pueblo que creyesen en el que había de venir después de él, o sea en Jesús. (5) Cuando oyeron esto, fueron bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús. (6) Y, habiéndoles Pablo impuesto las manos, vino sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo y se pusieron a hablar en lenguas y a profetizar.
Ya que el sacramento de Confirmación afirma y fortalece nuestro Bautismo, es necesario recibirlo en el tiempo apropiado, cualquier Católico que no haya recibido la Confirmación al mismo tiempo del Bautismo o cuando estudio educación religiosa o catecismo, durante la escuela primaria o secundaria, debe de ponerse en contacto con su párroco y programar recibir su Confirmación lo antes posible.
¿Qué efecto tiene la Confirmación?
Ademas de lo que ya antes he dicho, es del conocimiento general que el Bautismo es el primero de todos los otros siete sacramentos, y sabemos que con el Bautismo somos nacidos espiritualmente como ciudadanos del Cielo, pero, al igual que cualquier
ciudadano nacido en un país, a pesar de recibir nuestra ciudadanía como un derecho legal; es la obligación de nuestros padres el de educarnos, y a la vez es la obligación de cada individuo el de cumplir con sus deberes educativos.
Así nosotros como Católicos debemos de desarrollar nuestro conocimiento Cristiano y doctrina, ademas de practicar las virtudes y cumplir con nuestros principios para desarrollar los dones espirituales.
Los efectos básicos de la Confirmación son: 1) Nos enraízan mas profundamente con Dios; 2) Nos une mas firmemente con Cristo y nos recuerda que cada sacramento que recibimos, es un encuentro con Jesús mismo; 3) Aumenta en nosotros los dones del Espíritu; 4) Estrecha mas los lazos con la Iglesia; 5) Finalmente, nos fortalece para predicar y defender la fe, por hecho y palabra.
Una vez mas, si consideras qué clase de fortaleza necesitamos simplemente para vivir nuestra fe Católica en la sociedad actual, y para tomar decisiones morales frente a todas las tentaciones existentes, es fácil ver que necesitamos de Sabiduría y Fortaleza. No importa cual sea tu vocación, ya seas casado, religioso, sacerdote o soltero, necesitamos de la fuerza del Espíritu en nuestras vidas.
A Dios sea el poder, el honor y la gloria por siempre y para siempre, amen.

The way to the “Way”
I'm sure that all of you have seen those big green signs on the road that direct you the right way to your destination; for example if you are traveling south, coming from the Carazo area in Nicaragua, when you get to the point where the “Carretera Sur” (South Expressway) meets the “Carretera a Leon” (Expressway to Leon); there is a green sing with a straight arrow that points to Managua, and a left turning arrow that points to Leon; so even if you are not familiar with the area, by just following the signs, you'll get to where you are going without getting lost.
(Luke 1:39) At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, (40) where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. (41) When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. (42) In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! (43) But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (44) As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. (45) Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
(John 2:5) His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
We know that the way to the Father is through Jesus, and the way to Jesus, is through the Holy Spirit and Mary; the Holy Virgin said “yes” to the call of God, and the Holy Spirit covered her with his shadow, in a similar way that a ray of light goes through a window glass, the light passes through into the room without damaging the window glass pane; and Mary conceived, been still a virgin.
As we can see, we need to know how to get to the right way, and then, just follow it; Mary been pregnant with the Son of Man, Jesus of Nazareth, goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth and in doing so, brings baby Jesus to meet his predecessor John the Baptist, who immediately recognizes him and leaps of joy; for Elizabeth and John the Baptist, Mary is the way to Jesus and, it also for all of us.
(John 1:29) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
At the visitation, Mary had the option to say no to the request been presented to her by the angel Gabriel, she could have said for example, that she was thinking about a career in 'business administration' before getting into motherhood; or that she was thinking about been an actress or that she was not ready yet for prince charming; but no, the young Jewish girl, decided to be a part of the great plan of God for the salvation of the world. But why did she do that?
Well, let's suppose there is a young girl who was born from a humble family in a small province town like, Nagarote, Nicaragua; this “señorita” has studied computer technology with major in programming; then one day, she receives an employment offer from the president of Microsoft Corp. himself, who informs her, that he would be honor if she accepts their offer to be part of the team that is developing the next great software revolution.
I'm sure that girl would be elated, she would tell her boyfriend (if she had one) that he would have to wait for her, or just plain look for another girlfriend, because this offer is the dream of her life; I'll bet she would feel happy and honor that the president of Microsoft himself has addressed her with such an offer. Do you think I'm exaggerating? Wouldn't that be the reaction of a young scientist? I'm positive that any smart and ambitious youngster, would love to have that to happen to her. Now, if it is such an honor to receive an offer from a mere mortal man, don't you think it would be infinitely much better to receive a request from the Most High God?
Well my brothers and sisters, Mary was already a humble and well behave teenager, and when she saw the angel, she probably was stunned; but, the angel was not there to scare Mary, and most likely he used a soothing and reassuring tone of voice, that made the Jewish girl feel at ease and comfortable in the impressive presence of the man of God. Mary felt even more humble at the sight of such a person, and for the request been made to her. And as we already well know, she complied with the request, and had faith in the words of the angelic been and God.
(Ephesians 1:17) I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
So the moral of the story is, that to get on the right way, we need someone to point us in the right direction, and Mary and the Holy Spirit do that for us; Mary is the perfect example of a true child of God; as a human, there is no one like Mary in her attitude, virtuous life and dedication to the service of God. The Holy Spirit will illumine us and provide us with the proper gifts, to be able to comprehend and reflect Jesus in our lives, in a similar way as Mary did in her life.
God looks at our limitations, and because he loves us he does not take into account our weakness, but instead, provides us with the gifts of the Spirit, to help us
find our way to God. He furnishes us with God-like enhancements, that make our souls sensitive and responsive to his guidance. He raises up our natural powers so that we become docile and receptive to the promptings of the Spirit.How many gifts are provided by the Spirit? We can look in (Isaiah 11:2-3); (1 Corinthians 12:8-10); (Ephesians 4:7-13) and (Romans 12:3-8), to get the full list of Gifts given to us for the building of the Church, and to provide us with energy, self-surrender, and strength to make us amenable to divine inspiration.
(Isaiah 11:2). [2] And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness. [3] And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge according to the sight of the eyes, nor reprove according to the hearing of the ears. [4] But he shall judge the poor with justice, and shall reprove with equity for the meek of the earth (land) he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. [5] And justice shall be the girdle of his loins: and faith the girdle of his reins.
St. Thomas Aquinas, defines the Seven Gifts of the Spirit listed in (Isaiah 11:2) as follows:
Wisdom: Lets us see God at work in our lives and in the world; for the wise person, the wonders of nature, historical events, and the ups and downs or our lives take on deeper meaning. We see God as our Father and other people with dignity. We are able to see God in everyone and everything everywhere. Above all we learn to do the will of God.
Understanding: Makes us able to comprehend how we need to live as followers of Christ. A person with the gift of “understanding” is not confused by all the conflicting messages in our culture about the right way to live. The gift of “understanding” perfects a person's speculative reason in the comprehension of truth. It is the gift whereby self-evident principles are known.
Counsel (Right Judgment): With the gift of counsel/right judgment, we know the difference between right and wrong, and we choose to do what is right. A person with right judgment avoids sin and lives out the values taught by Jesus. This is the gift of truth that allows the person to respond prudently, and happily to believe our Christ is the Lord.
Fortitude (Courage): With the gift of fortitude/courage, we overcome our fear and are willing to take risks as a follower of Jesus Christ. A person with courage is willing to stand up for what is right in the sight of God, even if it means accepting rejection, verbal abuse, or even physical harm and death. The gift of courage allows people the firmness of mind that is required both in doing good and in enduring evil, especially with regard to goods or evils that are difficult, just like most of the martyrs did.
Knowledge: With the gift of knowledge, we understand the meaning of God. The gift of knowledge is more than an accumulation of facts.
Piety (Reverence): With the gift of reverence, sometimes called piety, we have a deep sense of respect for God and the Church. A person with reverence recognizes our total reliance on God and comes before God with humility, trust, and love. Piety is the gift whereby, at the Holy Spirit's instigation, we pay worship and duty to God as our Father.
Fear of the Lord (Wonder and Awe): With the gift of fear of the Lord we are aware of the glory and majesty of God. A person with wonder and awe knows that God is the perfection of all we desire: perfect knowledge, perfect goodness, perfect power and perfect love. This gift is the fear of being separated from God, this is a “filial fear”, like a child's fear of offending his father, rather than a “servile fear”, that is, a fear of punishment. This is also known as knowing God is all powerful. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Prov. 1:7) because it puts our mindset in its correct location with respect to God: we are the finite, dependent creatures, and He is the infinite, all-powerful Creator.
For what else do we need the gifts of the Spirit?
As told you before, Mary and the Holy Spirit are the two biggest arrows pointing us to Jesus, the reason I called them the two biggest arrows, is because also all the saints, point us to the Lord.
(1Corinthians 12:2) You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. (3) Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
To be able to recognize the Lord, we must have the Holy Spirit in our heart; and no one that denies that the Holy Spirit is God, could be called a Christian.
St. Paul also warns us that our present battle in life is against spiritual powers, and that we should be properly trained and prepared to be able to win, otherwise, we would become casualties or slaves of some brutal master or masters who'll have complete disregard for us and for our soul.
(Ephesians 6:12) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
The Sacrament of Confirmation
By the sacrament of Confirmation, we are transform into soldiers of Christ, and as soldiers, we are required to live a discipline and well organized life; we are required to live a sober life, and always on guard and taking care of our responsibilities and duties toward our commander in chief, Jesus the Christ; and to stay loyal to our church which is the brotherhood of Christians.
How is this accomplished by the Sacrament of Confirmation?
This happens because, by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.
How are we soldiers of Christ?
Again from the letters of St. Paul we see the reference to the word 'soldier' as an analogy to the battles we have to face in life, and this battles are for real, if not just read the local paper or watch the news and you'll realize that we have a tremendous task in front of us; we have to prepare our sons and daughters to go out and face a culture that is turning more hostile toward Christianity as days go by; a culture where the Christian values are mock and virtue is devalued. We have to stay close to each other and trained the youngsters in the Catholic doctrine, so their minds and souls are not overtaken by malicious and diabolical philosophies.
(Phillipians 2:25) But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.
(Philemon 1:2) To Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home.
As anybody who has been a soldier in the army knows, while the platoons are in the theater of operation, each and every 'soldier's safety and well being depends on the care, cooperation and participation of every other soldier in the platoon; in other words, they work and live as a unit. We the Catholics must live in the communion of the Body of Christ, we are the army of our Redeemer.
(Revelation 19:11) I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. (12) His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. (13) He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. (14) The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. (15) Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the wine-press of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. (16) On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
The Lord Jesus, is the one and only true General, of all the free men and women of the world.
(2 Timothy 2:3) Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs--he wants to please his commanding officer. A soldier lives to obey his commanding officer; while he's part of the army, he can not abandon his garrison, or participate in any other activity that has nothing to do with his duties as a soldier; a married Catholic man, has no business in going out with his buddies and abandoning his family, he can not be fooling around with other women or be playing the gigolo, he owes fidelity to his wife, and should be sharing his time with the family.
What is the form of the Confirmation act?
Before receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation the candidate should go to Confession. Then at the Confirmation ceremony the bishop or celebrant priest lays his hand on the confirmand (person being confirmed) which signifies the descent of the Holy Spirit and then, the confirmand is anointed with the special aromatic oil which has been consecrated by a bishop and which is called “chrism” and the celebrant pronounces the words: “ Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” (this is the central part of the ceremony) the seal is a consecration, representing the safeguarding by the Holy Spirit of the graces conferred on the Christian at Baptism.
Who is eligible for confirmation?
All those who have been baptized are eligible to be confirmed, and, while the Western Church suggests receiving the sacrament after reaching the "age of reason" (around seven years old), it can be received at any time. (A child in danger of death should receive Confirmation.)
How come I was confirmed as a baby, at the same time of my baptism?
Remember that not too long ago, the infant mortality rate was very high, specially in the third world countries, so for that reason, the Church would baptize and confirm little babies all at the same time.
Where do we see in the Scripture the establishment of the Confirmation act ?
First, let's remember that before Pentecost, the Lord had already breathed the Holy Spirit over the apostles, (John 20:21) Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (22) And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit (this was a kind of Baptism and empowering given exclusively to the twelve who represent the hierarchy of the Church) . (23) If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Fulfilling that way the prophesy of John the Baptist who told us, that the One coming after him, was going to baptize us with the Spirit and with fire.
Then on the day of Pentecost we read in (Acts 2:1) And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place: [2] And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. [3] And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. [5] Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem, Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Even though the Lord had chosen the group of twelve to manage his Church prior to Pentecost, today, the Spirit came to inagurate the institution or corporation known as the Christian Church, which would function under the leadership of Peter and and his partners; the spiritual gifts are given to this community which by this time had already matured and gone through many trials and, had had (and will continue to have) many successes and failures; never the less our Lord encourages us and promises to stay with us even to the end of time; from now on, the Holy Spirit will guide us and counsel us. At Baptism the flame of life and love was started in our souls, now is the time to throw in more logs into the fire, to ignite the whole world with the fire of the Holy Spirit.
(Acts 19:4) [4] Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus. [5] Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
[6] And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
Because Confirmation perfects our baptism, we are obliged to receive it "in due time." Any Catholic who did not receive Confirmation at baptism or as part of his religious education during grade school or high school should contact a priest and arrange to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
What are the effects of Confirmation?
First of all, let me say that we need Baptism as the initial Sacrament, because by it, we are spiritually born as citizens of heaven; but, as citizens naturally born in any country receive their citizenship as a right, it is the duty of the parents to educate their children; it is also the duty of every individual to develop his natural physical and intellectual abilities, by going to school and receiving the proper education. We as Catholics, must develop our knowledge of our Christian doctrine, and practice virtue,by way of which we will increase our spiritual gifts.
The basic effects of Confirmation are: a) It roots us more deeply in our relationship with God; b) it unites us more firmly with Christ and reminds us that every sacrament we receive is an encounter with Jesus himself; c) it increases in us the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, piety, fortitude and fear of the Lord; d) it strengthens our bond to the Church; e) finally, it gives us strength to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.
If you consider what strengths we need simply to live our Christian, Catholic lives in our present society and to make moral decisions in the face of serious temptation, it is easy to see how we need wisdom and strength. For example, a married couple raising children need to be able to counsel and encourage them to live their lives not by following the way of least resistance, but by taking the basic gospel message (“Love God and your neighbor”) and making it a part of their lives. No matter what our vocation, married, religious, priesthood or single, we need the strength of the Spirit in our lives.
To God be the glory and the power, and the honor for ever and ever, amen.
