Los Autores de la Doctrina del Rapto
Ya hemos mencionado antes que John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) era un abogado y cura Anglicano de la iglesia Irlandesa. Para él, sólo su opinión contaba, era brusco y estaba convencido de su habilidad de interpretar las Escrituras con autoridad, y no aceptaba contradicción o refutación por parte de sus seguidores.
Darby se copió del método Baconiano de dividir la historia en diferentes periodos; también creía que el pueblo de Dios en la tierra es solamente un pequeño resto y que por supuesto eran, sus seguidores; al igual que todos los otros “salvadores” de la humanidad, trató vanamente de reformar la Cristiandad por medio de hacer una
distinción, entre su congregación, y el Cristianismo Historico de la Iglesia Católica; él se consideraba la autoridad máxima y el árbitro final en cuanto se refiere a la verdad y la ortodoxia.
Nuestro amigo Darby, también creía que la “verdadera iglesia” consistía de todos aquellos que individualmente se unen a Cristo. La Iglesia según él, no es el Cuerpo de Cristo como una comunidad de gente, sino, individuos que tienen una relación directa con Cristo (suena como el motto evangélico de:”Cristo es mi salvador y Dios personal.”), sin consideración a ninguna denominación o afiliación. Se podría decir que Darby es el padre de los grupos no-denominacionales.
De veras, la Iglesia no es el Cuerpo de Cristo? Pero veamos lo que dice el Señor en: (Juan 17:11) Ya no estoy más en el mundo, pero ellos están en él; y yo vuelvo a ti. Padre santo, cuida en tu Nombre a aquellos que me diste, para que sean uno, como nosotros.
Dios es una comunidad del Padre el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo (la Santísima Trinidad), Dios es uno y no una división de tres deidades independientes (Darby quizás, al igual que los Testigos de Jehova, no pueden comprender que nadie tiene la capacidad de ni siquiera atisbar en este misterio, por lo tanto lo consideran nulo.)
Nosotros estamos supuestos a estar en unión por medio del Espíritu Santo, somos una comunidad de creyentes, que glorifican al Padre, de la misma forma que nuestro Señor lo glorificó mientras estaba aquí con nosotros. Esta es nuestra doctrina Católica, somos una hermandad unida en el amor de Dios.
Darby predicó ademas, que la espiritualidad de la 'verdadera' iglesia, significa que tendría muy poco que ver con los asuntos terrenales, y que no debe para nada involucrarse en ellos. Según él, la iglesia es celestial en su relación con Cristo, sin ninguna relación con los asuntos del mundo en que vivimos.
Ya que la iglesia---el "resto" del que habla Darby----es celestial, y no puede relacionarse con las realidades terrenales, debe de ser removida del mundo y ser llevada a su lugar indicado frente a Dios, para que El puede terminar su obra con su pueblo aquí en la tierra, los Judíos.
De ahí la necesidad de un Rapto que preceda el tiempo de la tribulación, evento que será de forma secreta y silenciosa en el cual el 'resto' ( la iglesia de Darby) será llevado al cielo, la tribulación por lo tanto no afectará a la iglesia celestial, ya que es una prueba exclusiva para los Judíos, para hacerlos reconocer a Cristo como el verdadero Mesías.
La distinción absoluta hecha por Darby y continuada por todos los dispensacionalistas entre el Israel del Antiguo Testamento y la Iglesia, resultó en dividir el Nuevo Testamento en partes diferentes, algunas dedicadas a los Judíos (la mayoría de los Evangelios), y otras exclusivamente para los “Cristianos” (la mayoría de las cartas de Pablo)---ahora saben uds. porqué los 'hermanos' predican tanto basados mayormente en las cartas del apóstol Pablo.
De acuerdo a los dispensacionalistas, los Judíos estaban supuestos a aceptar a Jesús como el Cristo cuando vino a la tierra y entrar así en el Reino. Su rechazo no los hizo perder su derecho a entrar en el Reino, sino que pospuso su aceptación para más tarde. El rechazo de los Judíos a Cristo hizo que otro pueblo fuese escogido como el Cuerpo y la Novia de Cristo---la Iglesia.
Darby escribió: “Siendo el Señor rechazado por los Judíos, se transformó en una persona puramente celestial (nada que ver con lo terrenal). Esta es la doctrina que encontramos peculiarmente en las cartas de Pablo. El Señor no es mas un Mesías Judío, sino un Cristo exaltado y glorificado, y ya que la iglesia no reconoce esta verdad, eso le ha causado debilidad espiritual y de autoridad". Por lo tanto la Iglesia no es mas que un plan secundario, un 'paréntesis' insertado en la historia. La historia de la Salvación ha tenido un desvío hacia la era de la Iglesia hasta que los Judíos estén preparado para regresar a Dios. El reloj profético se ha parado, hasta que el 'resto' espiritual ---la Iglesia--- haya sido removida por medio del Rapto.
Cyrus I Scofield (1843-1921) un abogado de Kansas City, vino a solidificar la forma de pensar dispensacionalista para las siguientes décadas. Scofield (quien no tenía ninguna preparación teológica) creó una “Biblia de referencia” que contenía notas, referencias con muchos textos y comentarios, para que la naturaleza “científica” de la profecía bíblica se hiciese evidente a los lectores sin mucha educación.
La Biblia de Scofield (que realmente es una copia exacta de la versión King James) fue publicad en 1909. Estaba muy bien empastada, bien organizada y sistemáticamente presentaba los principios dispensacionalistas, utilizando pasajes claves de las Escrituras---especialmente los libros de Daniel y el Apocalipsis----todo esto hizo que las ideas presentadas en esta Biblia influenciaran en adelante el pensamiento del conservatismo protestante Americano.
Este libro ha sido de gran influencia en diseminar los puntos de vista dispensacionalistas entre centenares de miles de lectores de la Biblia, y quienes no saben distinguir entre los escritos antiguos y la interpretación dada por Scofield. Esta Biblia vino a solidificar los escritos de Pablo como centrales para la doctrina de la iglesia y relegar los Evangelios a un segundo plano.
Para el protestante común, no es de importancia que Scofield no haya tenido la educación apropiada; el llamativo de la Biblia de Scofield se basa en su forma de estructura ordenada, la apariencia de exactitud científica en sus comentarios, y su lenguaje popular que gusta a sus lectores; muchos evangélicos que consideran la interpretación de Scofield como canónica, se sorprederian de saber que no es la única interpretación que existe de los libros sagrados.
El Regreso de los Judíos a la Tierra Prometida
Para los dispensacionalistas el evento del siglo XX fue la creación del estado de Israel en territorio Palestino en 1948, esto vino a hacer realidad la creencia dispensacionalista de que Israel, el pueblo de Dios en la tierra, debería de regresar a la Palestina para que el reloj profético volviera a caminar de nuevo, pero ahora por fin, la pieza que faltaba para que el plan de Dios tuviese éxito, había sido encontrada. Esta creencia es parte del psíquis Americano (y Británico), la cual tiene mucha influencia en la relación política con Israel.
Muchos pastores evangélicos Americanos han elevado su admiración y amor hacia el país de Israel a un grado de culto, para ellos, la bendición de Dios hacia cualquier individuo o nación se basa en el principio: 'Dios bendice a los que bendicen a Israel, y maldice a todos los que maldicen a Israel.'
Pero de dónde sacan los evangélicos esta idea?
La expresión de bendición/maldición, aparece antes en las Escritures a como lo vemos en (Génesis 12:3) “Haré de ti una gran nación y te bendeciré; voy a engrandecer tu nombre, y tú serás una bendición.Bendeciré a quienes te bendigan y maldeciré a quienes te maldigan. En ti serán bendecidas todas las razas de la tierra.»
En esta ocasión el Señor se dirigía a Abram quien es considerado tanto por los Judíos a como por los Musulmanes como “Nuestro Padre Abraham”; la bendición sin embargo se refería al Mesías que aparecería en el futuro; la expresión aparece de nuevo en (Números 24:8)
(Números 24:8) ¡Dios lo hace salir de Egipto, y le da cuernos de búfalo! Devora a las naciones enemigas, les quiebra los huesos, las atraviesa con sus flechas.
Se agacha, se acuesta como un león, como una leona: ¿quién lo hará levantarse? Benditos sean los que te bendicen, malditos sean los que te maldicen.»
Si leemos el libro de Números, nos damos cuenta que los Israelitas estaban por comenzar una guerra contra los Moabitas de quienes era rey Balaak, este contrató a Balaam (quien era un Judío) para que maldiciese a Israel y poderlos vencer en la batalla, pero Dios no permitió que eso pasase, protegió a Israel y los llevó a la victoria.
Toda persona o nación que confiá en Dios y cree en su poder, sera siempre bendecida; pero los que sólo confían en sus propios medios, tecnología, armas, brujerías, psicología e inteligencia, terminaran siendo vencidos. Que es lo que la experiencia nos ha enseñado al igual que la palabra de Dios, (Salmo 115:13) Que el Señor se acuerde de nosotros y nos bendiga: bendiga al pueblo de Israel, bendiga a la familia de Aarón, bendiga a los que temen al Señor, a los pequeños y a los grandes.
Estamos nosotros supuestos a bendecir a Israel? Por supuesto que sí! Y no sólo a Israel y toda la raza Judía, sino también a los Chinos, Musulmanes, ateos, Protestantes, Hindúes y toda la raza humana, porque todos somos hijos de Dios nuestro Padre; Cristo vino al mundo a salvar a todas las personas de todas las razas y grupos étnicos, sin excepción y sin ninguna otra condición, que la de aceptar a Cristo como nuestro Salvador y Señor.
A quien debemos de maldecir? A nadie! Recordemos que nuestro Señor nos enseñó que los dos mandamientos mas grandes son: (Mateo 22:37) Jesús le dijo: «Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el gran mandamiento, el primero.
El segundo es: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Toda la Ley y los Profetas se fundamentan en estos dos mandamientos.»
Agreguemos también (Mateo 7:12) Todo lo que ustedes desearían de los demás, háganlo con ellos: ahí está toda la Ley y los Profetas.
Si los evangélicos gustan tanto de bendecir a los Judíos en particular, porqué odian a la santísima Virgen María, quien es la mujer Judía mas santa que ha existido, y es ademas la madre de nuestro Salvador?
Quizás sea porque sus fanatismo los ciega, y aun cuando acusan a la Iglesia Católica de legalista, han reducido la bendición de Dios a una condición legal tan limitada a como lo expresa su motto de bendición/ maldición, lo que demuestra la irracionalidad e inflexibilidad del fundamentalismo.
Otro Cambio Dispensacionalista
Después cuando ya la doctrina o dogma dispensacionalista había sido establecida, aparece un hombre llamado Charles C Ryrie, quien llegó a refinarla y darle los últimos toques, no entraremos en los cambios que hizo pues fueron simplemente técnicos, sin embargo cabe mencionar que Ryrie fue el decano del departamento de teología y profesor de teología sistemática en el Seminario Teológico de Dallas, Tx de 1962 a 1983. Y de esta escuela saldrá el hombre que últimamente ha propagado mas que nadie la 'doctrina del Rapto' , el predicador y prolífico autor: Hal Lindsey.
Esta última sección probablemente ha sido muy aburrida para la mayoría de lectores, pero es necesario conocer las bases de la popular doctrina del Rapto; como Católicos tenemos la obligación y el deber de conocer y buscar la verdad, recordemos las palabras de nuestro Maestro: “La verdad os hará libres”. Así es, la verdad nos librará del error, la falsedad, apostasía y el fanatísmo.
Dos Segunda “Segunda Venidas del Señor”?
Veamos ahora uno de los principales problemas con la teoría evangélica del Rapto. Si hay un Rapto, entonces significaría que existe una “segunda” Segunda Venida del Señor, los cual es anti-bíblico e ilógico; aun muchos protestantes que no pertenece al grupo dispensacionalista tienen problema con este punto.
Cómo entonces estamos supuestos a interpretar las palabras de San Pablo en (1 Tesalonicenses 4:16), y creemos los Católicos en una Segunda Venida del Señor?
(1 Tesalonicenses 4:16) Porque a la señal dada por la voz del Arcángel y al toque de la trompeta de Dios, el mismo Señor descenderá del cielo. Entonces, primero resucitarán los que murieron en Cristo. Después nosotros, los que aún vivamos, los que quedemos, serenos llevados con ellos al cielo, sobre las nubes, al encuentro de Cristo, y así permaneceremos con el Señor para siempre.
Por supuesto que los Católicos creemos en la Segunda Venida del Señor, lo confesamos todos los Domingos en la Misa, cuando recitamos el Credo.
Ahora, el versículo anterior ha sido abusado para explicar varias teorías evangélicas; 1_La frase: “por la voz del Arcángel”, si la aislamos, podríamos erradamente concluir de que existe solamente un arcángel (que es lo que predican los evangélicos) en la corte celestial, ya que la palabra aparece aquí mencionada en singular, pero, es eso suficiente para concluir de que no hay más arcángeles?
En el presente USA está peleando dos guerras, una en Iraq que está en su fase final, y la otra en Afganistán; cuando oímos las noticias por la radio o la TV, siempre se refieren a lo que dijo o reportó “el general” el día de hoy. Existe solamente un general en las fuerzas armadas de USA?
Por supuesto que no, probablemente hay miles de generales, pero, a cada guerra se le asigna un 'comandante general' quien a su vez, asigna comandantes para cada misión de ataque, porque esa es la mejor forma de control y de llegar a la victoria. Pues igual sucede con los ejércitos celestiales.
2_De acuerdo a los 'hermanos', el Rapto será un suceso secreto, y sólo los 'elegidos' (los que creen en la doctrina del Rapto) se darán cuenta de ello; un momento, un momento por favor! San Pablo nos acaba de decir que : “Porque a la señal dada por la voz del Arcángel y al toque de la trompeta de Dios, el mismo Señor descenderá del cielo.” (o sea que habrá un grito como cuando uno se lanza al ataque) habrá ademas un toque de trompeta, lo que suena como a un evento muy bullicioso, pues las trompetas hacen bastante ruido, si no, piensen en la banda de guerra de su escuela, o en un grupo salsero con dos o tres trompetas, o una banda de mariachis, creen uds. que será algo silencioso o ruidoso? Yo creo que será algo con ruidos muy fuertes.
Si agregamos ademas (Apocalipsis 1:6) El nos ama y por su sangre nos ha purificado de nuestros pecados, haciendo de nosotros un reino (oh, oh, una vez mas la Iglesia es referida como un “reino”, o me equivoco?) y una raza de sacerdotes de Dios, su Padre. A él la gloria y el poder por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
Miren, viene entre nubes; lo verán todos, incluso los que lo traspasaron, y llorarán por su muerte todas las naciones de la tierra. Sí, así será.
A como podemos ver, somo ya considerados un Reino (no tenemos que esperar llegar al cielo para unirnos al Reino) o que pertenecemos al Reino, vemos aquí que la segunda Venida ( y no otra) del Señor será muy pública, pues se nos dice que “lo verán todos” y que “todas las naciones” lloraran por su muerte. Amén.
Parece que los evangélicos no interpretan a San Pablo literalmente, sino al pie de la letra, dando así la impresión de que el apóstol contradice la versión del Señor, refiriéndose a su Venida.
Qué quieres decir con interpretar a San Pablo al pie de la letra y no, literalmente y en qué contradice San Pablo al Señor?
Si buscás la definición de la palabra 'literalmente' en el diccionario, notarás que no significa interpretar una frase palabra por palabra, sino, darle el significado intentado por el autor de una idea; por ejemplo: si te digo: 'está lloviendo sapos y culebras'. Vos no pensás que si salís a ver, verás cayendo del cielo sapos y culebras de verdad, sino, que esperás ver, mucha agua, un torrencial, un diluvio; si o no?
Pues bien, el significado literal de mi expresión, es que está lloviendo muy fuerte, más de lo normal. Ahora si el Señor viene a raptar a los 'hermanos', eso será una segunda Venida, y si después regresa a combatir y vencer las fuerzas malignas, pues eso será una “Tercera Venida” de la cual nunca nadie ha dicho nada, excepto los dispensacionalistas evangélicos. Aquí valdría usar la frase protestante: “Donde Está Eso En la Biblia?”

The Men behind the Rapture Doctrine
As we have already mentioned, John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) was a former lawyer and a priest (Anglican) of the Church of Ireland . Opinionated, harsh and absolutely convinced of his ability to interpret Scripture authoritatively, allowed no dissent or disagreement from his “followers”.
Darby copied the system of dividing history into eras from a Baconian method of historical interpretation; he also believed that the people of God on earth are only a small “remnant”, and of course who were his followers, and like many other “saviors” of the people of God, vainly sought to reform Christianity by separating themselves from historical Christianity as found in the Catholic Church and setting themselves up as final arbiters of truth and orthodoxy.
Darby also believed that the “true church” consisted of those who joined themselves to Christ as individuals. The church was not the Body of Christ as a community of people, but as individuals having a direct relation to Christ (sounds like the evangelical motto: “Jesus is my 'personal' God and savior.”), regardless of any denominational affiliation. In other words, Darby could be considered the father of the “nondenominational” groups.
Really? But, let's see what Jesus says: (John 17:11) I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one. Even God is a community of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (the Holy Trinity), God is one and not a division or individual deities; we are supposed to be in union by the Spirit and as a community of believers, glorified the Father, the same way our Lord and Savior glorified Him while He was with us. This is our Catholic teaching, we are a brotherhood united by the love of God.
Darby also believed that the 'true' Church's spiritual character meant she should have little or no involvement in earthly affairs. He wrote that the Church is properly heavenly, in its calling and relationship with Christ, forming no part of the course of events on earth. Because the Church---the spiritual remnant---is heavenly and cannot be aligned with earthly realities, she will need to be removed from the world and taken to her rightful place before God can continue his work with the earthly people, the Jews.
Thus, the need for a pretribulational Rapture, a secret and silent removal of the remnant out of the
world. The great Tribulation following the 'rapture' will not affect the heavenly people since it will be concerned with earthly things; it will be a testing of the Jewish people meant to bring them to a recognition of Jesus as the true Messiah.
The absolute distinction made by Darby and subsequent dispensationalists between Old Testament Israel and the Church resulted in a division of the New Testament into parts, some meant for the Jews (most of the Gospels), and some meant for Christians (most of Paul's writings)--- now you know why the evangelicals talk and teach so much based on the letters of St. Paul--- .
The Jews, according to dispensationalism, were meant to accept Jesus as the Christ and enter into the Kingdom when he first came . When they rejected him, they did not lose their right to the Kingdom, but it was postponed until a later time. The rejection of Jesus by the Jewish people meant that another people had to become his Body and Bride---the Church.
Darby wrote, “The Lord, having been rejected by the Jewish people, is become wholly a heavenly person. This is the doctrine which we peculiarly find in the writings of the apostle Paul. It is no longer the Messiah of the Jews, but a Christ exalted, glorified; and it is for want of taking hold of this exhilarating truth, that the church has become so weak" (Darby Writings---Poythress:Understanding Dispensationalism.) Here the dualism of dispensationalism is further crystallized: heavenly versus earthly, Jewish versus Christian, and material Messiah versus heavenly Person.
The Church is therefore a back-up plan, a “parenthetical” insert into history. Salvation history has been detoured into the Church age until the Jewish people are ready to return to God. The prophetic clock is paused until the spiritual remnant, the Church, is removed from earthy by the Rapture. Clarence Bass correctly summarizes this belief by stating, “Whatever evaluation history may make of [dispensationalism], it will attest that dispensationalism is rooted in Darby's concept of the church---a concept that sharply distinguishes the church from Israel, assigns an exclusivist role to the church in an apostate Christendom, [and] gives the church a heavenly title and futuristic character.
Cyrus I Scofield (1843-1921) a Kansas City lawyer , solidified the way dispensationalism would be understood for the next several decades. Scofield (who had no formal theological training) created a “study Bible” containing extensive notes, cross references, and commentary so that the “scientific” nature of biblical prophecy would be evident to the average layman. The Scofield Reference Bible (actually a verbatim copy of the King James version) was published in 1909. Presented in neatly organized and systematic manner, its dispensationlist premises regarding key passages of Scripture----especially books like Daniel and Revelation---entered into the mainstream
of conservative American Protestantism.
The book has been subtly but powerfully influential in spreading [dispensational] views among hundreds of thousands who have regularly read the Bible and who often have been unaware of the distinction between ancient text and the Scofield interpretation. For dispensationalists the writings of Paul became central for the “Church age”, while the Gospels were relegated to a peripheral position.
To the average evangelical, it does not matter that Scofield didn't have the proper education; the appeal of the Scofield Bible is based in its orderly structure, the appearance of scientific accuracy in its commentary on Scripture, and its direct appeal to the average reader. Many evangelicals, who take the interpretation of Scofield as canonicity, would be surprise to know that there are other interpretations.
The Jews Return to the Promise Land
For the dispensationalists the event of the XXth century was the creation of a Palestine homeland for Israel in 1948, this came to fulfill the dispensationalist believe that Israel, God's “earthly people”, must return to Palestine before the prophetic clock could once again start ticking, but now, the final piece for God's plan to succeed is finally here. This believe has permeated the American (and British) policies toward Israel; many evangelical pastors have elevated their admiration and love for the nation Israel to a worship degree. For them, the blessings of God toward the individual is based solely on the principle: God blesses those who bless Israel and curses those who curse Israel.
But, where do the evangelicals get this idea?
The blessing/cursing expression appears before in Scripture, as we see in (Genesis 12:3) I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." At that time He was addressing Abraham, who is considered by both the Jews and the Muslims alike, as “Father Abraham”; the blessings been promised here, were referring to the Messiah that would come in then future; the expression appears again in:(Numbers 24:8)
(Numbers 24:8) "God brought them out of Egypt; they have the strength of a wild ox. They devour hostile nations and break their bones in pieces; with their arrows they pierce them.
Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse them? "May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed!"
If we read the book of Numbers, we'll find that the Israelites were in a war against Balaak king of the Moabites, who hired a prophet named Balaam (who was a Jew) to curse Israel, but, God didn't allowed that to happen instead, He protected the Israelites and led them to victory.
Every person or nation who trust in the Lord and believes in his saving power, will always be blessed; but the ones who only trust in their technology, weapons or sorcery and intelligence, will end up been beaten. Which is what we have been taught by experience and by the word of God, (Psalm 115:13) says: he will bless those who fear the LORD-- small and great alike.
Now, are we supposed to bless Israel? Yes! and not only Israel and the whole Jewish race, but we must also bless the Chinese, the Muslims, the atheists, the protestants, the hindus and the whole human race, because we are all creatures of God our Father; Christ came to the world, to save every person of every race and ethnic background, without exception and without any other condition but, to accept Christ as our Lord and Savior.
Who should we curse? Nobody! Let's remember that our Lord taught us that the two greatest commandments are: (Matt 22:40) Love God Almighty with all the strength of your heart, mind and soul and your neighbor as yourself; and in this hang the whole Law and the Prophets. Go do this, and you'll always be blessed by God Almighty. (Matt 7:12) So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
But if the evangelicals love to bless the Jews in particular, why do they hate the holy Virgin Mary who is the most saintly “Jewish” woman that had ever existed, and the mother of our Savior?
Maybe because their fanaticism blinds them, and even when they accuse the Catholic Church of legalism, they reduced the blessing of God to a legal condition, which shows their irrationality and the inflexibility of fundamentalism.
Another Dispensationalist Shift
Then after the 'doctrine' or 'dogma' of dispensationalism has been established, a man named Charles C Ryrie came to refine the doctrine and give it its final touch up, we won't get into it since it is mostly cosmetic, but it's worth mentioning that Ryrie was the chairman of the theology department and professor of systematic theology at Dallas Theological Seminary from 1962 to 1983. And from this school will emerged the man who has propagated the 'Rapture doctrine' more than anyone else, preacher: Hal Lindsey.
This Last section has been probably boring for some of you the readers, but it is necessary to know what are the basis on which the popular doctrine of the Rapture rests; as Catholics we have the duty and obligation to know the 'truth', just let's remember the words of our Teacher: “The truth will set you free.” That's right, the truth will set us free from error, apostasy, falsehood and fanaticism.
Two second “Second Comings of the Lord”?
Now let's look at one of the main problems with the evangelical theory of the Rapture.
If there is a Rapture, then, there is a second “Second Coming of the Lord”, and that is unbiblical and illogical; even many protestants who are not dispensationalists have problems with this point.
How then are we suppose to interpret St. Paul's words in (1 Thessalonians 4:16), and do we Catholics believe in a Second Coming of The Lord ?
(1 Thessalonians 4:16) For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord?
Of course we Catholics believe in the Second Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we even confess that every Sunday in the Mass, when we recite the Creed.
The previous verse has been misused to explain several evangelical theories; 1_the phrase: “with the archangel's call”; if you take it in an isolated manner, you might think that there is only one archangel (which is what most evangelicals preach) in the court of heaven, since “the archangel” is mentioned in singular, but, is that enough to prove that there are no more archangels?
Right now the USA is fighting 2 wars, one which is supposed to be in its final chapter in Irak, and another one in Afghanistan; when you hear the news on the radio, they always refer to what the general (in singular) either in Irak or Afghanistan has said or reported today. Is there only one general in the USA armed forces? Of course not! They have probably thousands, but, each war is assigned only one commander general, and he in turn assigns a commander for each battle, because that is the best way to keep things under control and the best road to victory, and so it is with the heavenly hosts.
2_According to the 'brothers' the Rapture will be a “secret event”, and only the “elected ones” (the ones that believe in the Rapture) will know about it; well, well, well! But St. Paul just told us that “the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command (yelling a big order, like at the beginning of a big battle), with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.” ( this sound like a very noisy event, and not a silence and quiet one, what do you think ? Because to me, whenever trumpets are used, is for the purpose of making a big sound (big noise if you like); think of the marching band of any school, or of a “Salsa group”, or a Mariachi band; they are all very noisy, don't you think?
Now if you add (Revelation 1:6) it says: To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom (oh oh, here again the church is called a “kingdom” or am I wrong?) and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.
As we can see, we are already the Kingdom (we don't have to wait to get to heaven to join the Kingdom) or belong to the Kingdom, and the coming (the Second Coming and no other) of the Lord will not be secret, we have just been told that “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.”
The evangelicals want to take St. Paul not literally, but to the letter, giving the impression that the apostle contradicts the Lord and gives us a better explanation of what's suppose to happen at the end.
What do you mean by “taking St. Paul to the letter instead of literally”? And what is the contradiction between St. Paul's explanation and the Lord's one?
If you look for the definition of the word literally in the dictionary, you'll notice that it doesn't mean to interpret an idea word for word, but, to give it the intended meaning of its author; for example: if I say. “It's raining dogs and cats”. You won't think or expect to go out and find dogs and cats falling from the sky; but, you'll expect to see a down pour, heavy rain, lots of water, yes or no?
Well, the literal meaning of the above expression is, that it's raining very hard, more than normal. If the Lord comes to rapture the evangelicals, that will be a Second Coming, and if then He comes back for the final judgment and the final battle against the forces of evil, that will be a “Third Coming” of which nobody else has ever heard of before, except the dispensantionalist evangelicals.
