El movimiento Carismático de los 60's

Con seguridad conoces a alguien que pertenece a un grupo o iglesia que se denominan 'carismáticos'; por cierto que al comienzo de los 60's hubo un gran movimiento en la iglesia, incluyendo las iglesias Protestante y la Católica, que fue
designado como el “movimiento carismático”; el termino carismático se relaciona al Espíritu Santo, o los dones del Espíritu ( también favor y gracia); debemos sin embargo de tener cuidado y no pensar que de pronto la Iglesia cambió, o se hizo mas completa, tampoco es correcto pensar que bailar el “cumbayá” es equivalente a estar lleno (ungido) del Espíritu.
La razón por que les digo esto, es porque en cierta ocasión atendí una celebración patrocinada por un grupo carismático, y durante toda la función hubo oradores, música de alabanza y mucha danza, que según mis amigos era la danza del Espíritu Santo, y para ser sincero, parecía que todos los que estaban ahí participando, la estaban pasando muy bien.
Creo que toda celebración Cristiana debe de ser muy alegre, siempre y cuando se incluyan buenas enseñanzas e instrucciones como parte del acto; después de todo, estamos supuestos a ser la gente mas feliz del mundo, ya que la causa de nuestra alegría es Cristo el Señor, El ha triunfado contra el poder de las tinieblas, por medio de su muerte, resurrección y ascensión a los cielos, donde ha llegado a preparar un lugar para todos nosotros y sus santos. The Charismatic movement of the 60's
I'm sure you know someone who belongs to a group or church that call themselves “charismatic”; and as a matter of fact, just about the beginning of the 60's, there was a whole movement even in the Catholic church, that was designated as the “charismatic movement”; the term 'charismatic' relates to the Holy Spirit or the gifts (also grace or favor) of the Spirit; but I think we must be careful not to think that all of a sudden, we have a new kind of church or a more complete one, neither we should confuse dancing the 'cumbaya' with been filled with the Spirit.
The reason I tell you this, is because once I attended a celebration of some sort, sponsored by a charismatic group and during the whole thing there were speakers, there was praising music and singing and of course there was dancing; according to my friend, it was the dance of the Holy Spirit, and to be honest with you, it appeared as if everybody was enjoying the dance and having a good time.
I think it is OK to make a Christian celebration a happy one, as long as we have good teaching and instruction along with it, it's just fine; after all we are supposed to be the happiest people in the world because our reason for joy is Christ the Lord, He has triumphed over the powers of evil with His death, resurrection and ascension back into heaven, where He has prepared a place for us and for all his Saints. Una cosa que debemos de mantener en mente es que el Espíritu Santo siempre ha estado presente en la Iglesia, somos nosotros los que nos hemos olvidado de llenarnos del Espíritu, y creo que durante el movimiento carismático de los 60's lo que realmente pasó, es que muchos Cristianos se percataron que era necesario tener una renovación espiritual, pues parecía que las prácticas de la Iglesia se habían tornado desabridas, sólo formalidades y rituales pero sin la unción y el fuego del Espíritu Santo.
(Apocalipsis 2:1) Al Ángel de la Iglesia de Éfeso, escribe: Esto dice el que tiene las siete estrellas en su mano derecha, el que camina entre los siete candeleros de oro. Conozco tu conducta: tus fatigas y paciencia; y que no puedes soportar a los malvados y que pusiste a prueba a los que se llaman apóstoles sin serlo y descubriste su engaño. Tienes paciencia: y has sufrido por mi nombre sin desfallecer.
Pero tengo contra ti que has perdido tu amor de antes.
Date cuenta, pues, de dónde has caído, arrepiéntete y vuelve a tu conducta primera. Si no, iré donde ti y cambiaré de su lugar tu candelero, si no te arrepientes. Tienes en cambio a tu favor que detestas el proceder de los nicolaítas, que yo también detesto. El que tenga oídos, oiga lo que el Espíritu dice a las Iglesias: al vencedor le daré a comer del árbol de la vida, que está en el Paraíso de Dios.
Usaré ahora un par de ejemplos para aclarar lo anterior: cuando una joven pareja están enamorados, no pueden vivir el uno sin el otro, se quieren acariciar y besar mucho durante el día; si pasaran separados por una semana, se les hace como una eternidad; la amada o el amado no tienen defectos, la voz de la pareja es como cantos angelicales, y sus ojos tienen la belleza del sol de la mañana, la amada/o es perfecta.
Pero qué pasa después de 5 años de matrimonio?
El amor se enfría, el entusiasmo desaparece, lo que era placentero y amoroso es ahora una rutina sin sabor, si la otra persona se ausenta por un par de días no extrañamos su ausencia, ahora reñimos aun por cosas sin importancia.
Otro ejemplo es la música, para que haya música es necesario que haya melodía, harmonía y ritmo; si falta cualquiera de esos tres elementos, no existe (buena) música. Quizás durante el tiempo o al pasar de los años la Iglesia perdió la harmonía o el ritmo, y su mensaje ya no tocaba el alma de los hombres, por lo tanto era necesario regresar a lo básico que es lo que el movimiento carismático de los 60' trajo a la Iglesia; la Iglesia igual que la de Éfeso, había perdido su amor (entusiasmo) aunque había mantenido sus formalidades y ritos, pero no así El Espíritu Santo.
One thing we must understand, and that is the fact that the Holy Spirit has always been active in the Church, but we have forgotten at times, to
be filled with the Spirit, and I think during that 'charismatic movement' of the 60's, what really happened was, that many Christians realized that it was necessary to have a spiritual revival, someone realized that the doctrine and practices of the Church had become insipid, just formalities and rituals, but lacking the fire and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
(Revelation 2:1) "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands: I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.
Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”
Let me use a couple of examples: when a young couple falls in love, they can't be without each other for too long, they want to embrace and kiss each other almost every minute of the day; a week without the beloved is like an eternity; they find no fault in the loved one, the voice of the other person sounds like angelical music, and his or her eyes have the light and beauty of the morning sun, the loved one is perfect. But what happens after 5 years of marriage?
Love becomes cold, the enthusiasm is gone, what was pleasurable and lovely, is now a routine and lacks flavor, if the other person leaves for a couple of days, we don't miss her/ him that much, now we have arguments and fights even over little things.
Another example could be music, in order to have music we should have, melody, harmony and rhythm; if you're missing anyone of the three, you don't have (good) music. So maybe through the years the Church lost its rhythm, or its harmony, the result was that it didn't touch the soul of men anymore and it was necessary to go back to basis, which is what the revival of the 60's accomplished and which was known as the “charismatic movement.” The whole Christian church became like the church of Ephesus, that lost its first love (and enthusiasm), never the less it kept its formalities, and rituals, but not the Holy Spirit with it.
El Hablar en lenguas
No me considero carismático, pero me interesa mantener una relación con el Dios Trino, El Padre, Hijo y el Espíritu Santo, no para hablar en 'lenguas' que es lo que algunos consideran la marca de distinción de una persona carismática, pero en esto estoy con el apóstol San Pablo quien no consideraba el hablar en lenguas una cosa muy importante, y ya que somos gente educada, dejemos que él nos lo explique: (1 Corintios 14:5) “Deseo que habléis todos en lenguas; prefiero, sin embargo, que profeticéis. Pues el que profetiza, supera al que habla en lenguas, a no ser que también interprete, para que la asamblea reciba edificación.
Y ahora, hermanos, supongamos que yo vaya donde vosotros hablándoos en lenguas, ¿qué os aprovecharía yo, si mi palabra no os trajese ni revelación ni ciencia ni profecía ni enseñanza?
Así sucede con los instrumentos de música inanimados, tales como la flauta o la cítara. Si no dan distintamente los sonidos (notas musicales), ¿cómo se conocerá lo que toca la flauta o la cítara?
Y si la trompeta no da sino un sonido confuso, ¿quién se preparará para la batalla?
Así también vosotros: si al hablar no pronunciáis palabras inteligibles, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que decís? Es como si hablarais al viento.”
He visto a personas que hablan en 'lenguas', pero nunca he oído a nadie traduciendo lo que dijo el que habló en lenguas, lo que prueba lo que dice San Pablo, que el hablar en 'lenguas' es innecesario a menos que se interprete lo que se dijo en el lenguaje extraño utilizado por el que ha hablado en 'lenguas', porque si me preguntan a mi, yo no he entendido ni papas, por lo tanto no es edificante para la comunidad y es nada mas que un show.
Mis sacerdotes favoritos hablan en perfecto Español o Inglés, y sé que son carismáticos pues sus enseñanzas son inspiradoras, alentadoras y oírlos hablar es como escuchar al Señor mismo, ya que todo de lo que hablan es relacionado al evangelio, y la Palabra de Dios, no se ponen a hablar de ellos mismos o en contra de nadie, son como voceros comisionados de Dios y su tema es nada mas Jesús, y acerca de las buenas relaciones de la Iglesia y de que terminemos nuestra “carrera” a como le llama San Pablo.
Speaking in tongues
I don't considered myself a charismatic person, but I'm interested in developing a good relationship with the Triune God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; not to speak in tongues, which is what some groups considered the hallmark of a “charismatic person”, but here, I'm with St. Paul who didn't considered speaking in tongues the only necessary gift of the Spirit, and since we are educated people, let's let him tell us about it: (1 Corinthians 14:5) “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.
Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.”
So far I've seen and heard 'some people' speaking in tongues, but never someone who could translate what they are saying, which proves what St. Paul tells us, that to speak (or to think that they are speaking) in tongues is useless, unless they could interpret for us the 'strange language' they are using in the Church, I don't know what the heck they are saying; in doing so, they are not edifying the Church, just showing off and being arrogant.
My favorite priests speak in plain Spanish, or English, and I know they are 'charismatic' because their teachings is inspiring, uplifting and to hear them teach is like hearing Jesus himself, since everything they say is about the Gospels and the Word of God, they don't talk about themselves, or against anybody, they are
like God's commissioned spoke persons, their only theme is Christ, and about building the church and to finish the 'race' as St. Paul calls it.De manera que si nunca llegas a hablar en 'lenguas' no te preocupes por ello, seguramente tienes otros dones que el Espíritu Santo te ha donado y los cuales son muy útiles para la Iglesia a la cual perteneces; deja el hablar en 'lenguas' a los santos, porque cuando ellos escriben lo hacen en nuestro propio idioma y nos explican en detalles cualquier mensaje que el Señor quiere darnos y el cual nos beneficiará a todos.
Durante Pentecostes, los apóstoles, la santa Virgen María y muchos otros que se mantuvieron por nueve días (primera novena) rezando en el cuarto del piso superior, quedaron llenos del Espíritu Santo y hablaron en lenguas que todos les entendían aun cuando eran gente con diferentes lenguajes; (Hechos 2:7) “Estupefactos y admirados decían: "¿Es que no son galileos todos estos que están hablando?
Pues ¿cómo cada uno de nosotros les oímos en nuestra propia lengua nativa?
Partos, medos y elamitas; habitantes de Mesopotamia, Judea, Capadocia, el Ponto, Asia,Frigia, Panfilia, Egipto, la parte de Libia fronteriza con Cirene, forasteros romanos, judíos y prosélitos, cretenses y árabes, todos les oímos hablar en nuestra lengua las maravillas de Dios."
Todos estaban estupefactos y perplejos y se decían unos a otros: "¿Qué significa esto?" Otros en cambio decían riéndose: "¡Están borrachos!"
Puedes ver aquí claramente que el Espíritu Santo no es un Espíritu de confución y 'lenguaje chino', su mensaje es claro y de buen tono, de lo contrario habría sido como en la torre de Babel, donde no se podían entender porque cada uno hablaba su propio idioma diferente, de manera que la próxima vez si estas frente a alguien quien alega hablar en 'lenguas', pídele que traduzca lo que dijo, de lo contrario no es nada mas que una charada.
So, if you never speak in 'tongues' don't worry about it, you probably have one or more of the other 'gifts' of the Holy Spirit that are more useful to the church that you now belong to; leave the 'tongues' to the saints, because when they write, they do it in our own language, and will explain to us what the meaning of their message is, and we would all benefit from it.
At Pentecost all the apostles, the holy Virgin Mary and many others that were in prayer at the upper room for nine days (first novena), were filled with the Spirit and spoke in tongues, and everyone who heard them, could understand them in their own language,(Acts 2:7) “Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? And there were Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."
Here you can see clearly, that the Holy Spirit is not a spirit of confusion and 'chinese language', His message is loud and clear, otherwise it would have been like at the tower of Babel, where they could not understand each other, where everyone spoke his own language, so, the next time someone claims to speak in tongues, please ask him/her to translate what he/she is saying, because otherwise, it is just a charade.
Cristo como la luz del mundo, refleja y atenúa su intensidad como por medio de un prisma, el cual es los siete dones del Espíritu Santo, en el don del Temor a Dios El es el soberano a quier reverenciamos como el Señor de la vida y de la muerte; en la Fortaleza El es la fuerza omnipotente que se entrega a manos débiles; en la Piedad El es el Padre a quien nos adherimos con afecto filial, y exaltamos su gloria; en el don de Consejería El es la eterna y suprema norma de la acción humana; en el Conocimiento El es un ejemplo inagotable para sus criaturas; en el don del Entendimiento, es el fin sobrenatural que ilumina todo conocimiento.
Y en la Sabiduría, El es el punto focal que ilumina el alma pues Dios es la fuente del amor, y ya que El y la Sabiduría se unen en un abrazo de amor, revelan con la suavidad del amor el secreto de la verdad. Pero bajo todos estos aspectos es el mismo ideal: es Dios, es el Padre de cuyo pecho amoroso nos llega el Espíritu Santo trayendo la fecundidad a las almas, para reproducir en ellas la obra maestra que es, Cristo el Señor.
Cómo nos llenamos del Espíritu Santo
Cómo nos llenamos del Espíritu Santo? Ya en el capitulo anterior hemos dicho algo al respecto, pero repasemos un poco ya que esto es algo muy importante a entender, y ya que no encontraremos un set de instrucciones claras ni en la Biblia ni en el Catecismo, que yo pueda recordar, les daré lo que a mi se me ha dado; ya hemos dicho que tenemos que ser humildes, después debemos de hacer un buen examen de conciencia seguido de una buena confesión, de todos nuestros pecados, desde los mas pequeños (veniales) hasta los mas grandes (mortales) sin omitir ninguno; como bueno Católicos sabemos que fuimos ungidos por el Espíritu durante nuestro bautismo, pero eso es algo así como un 'entre' o comienzo, y no algo que sucede una sola vez y ya.
Por eso el Señor nos dice en (Lucas 11:11) “¿Qué padre hay entre vosotros que, si su hijo le pide un pez, en lugar de un pez le da una culebra; o, si pide un huevo, le da un escorpión? Si, pues, vosotros, siendo malos, sabéis dar cosas buenas a vuestros hijos, ¡cuánto más el Padre del cielo dará el Espíritu Santo a los que se lo pidan!" Así es Virginia, debemos de pedir al Padre, el don del Espíritu Santo, no olvidemos sin embargo que el pecado nos impide el obtener la unción del Espíritu, a como ya alguien ha dicho: el pecado es como un bloqueo que existe en una cañería de agua, que evita que el agua corra por élla libremente; cuando tenemos el corazón cargado de pecados, apenamos al Espíritu y no somos dignos de poseerle.
Ya tenemos en nuestra lista, humildad, confesión, arrepentimiento (incluyendo penitencia) y pedirle al Señor que nos de el Espíritu Santo, pero nos hacen falta todavía un par de cosas mas; hablemos por ejemplo de quien controla o domina nuestras vidas, es nuestro ego o es Cristo? Si decimos que Cristo es nuestro Señor, pero no lo hacemos el centro de nuestra vida, no estaremos siguiendo las recomendaciones de Cristo en: (Lucas 9:23) “Decía a todos: "Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz cada día, y sígame.”
Nosotros quizás somos los únicos señores de nuestra vida, nos sentamos en nuestro trono sin considerar a Dios en ninguna de nuestras decisiones, buscamos nuestros propios deseos y nos olvidamos que San Pablo nos dijo: (2 Corintios 5:14) “Porque el amor de Cristo nos apremia al pensar que, si uno murió por todos, todos por tanto murieron. Y murió por todos, para que ya no vivan
para sí los que viven, sino para aquel que murió y resucitó por ellos.” Estas dispuesto a someterte a la autoridad de Cristo y cederle el control de tu vida? No me contestes, se honesto contigo mismo y contéstate tu mismo la pregunta.Christ as the light of the world diffuses its intensity like through a prism which is the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and in the gift of Fear, He is the sovereign we revere as the Master of life and death; in Fortitude, He is the omnipotent force that delivers itself into the hands of weakness; in Piety, He is the Father to whom we must adhere with filial affection, extolling His glory; in Counsel, He is the eternal and supreme norm of human action; in Knowledge, the inexhaustible exemplar of creatures; in Understanding, the supernatural end that sheds light on all knowledge.
And in Wisdom, He is the focal point that illumines the soul because He is the focal point of love, and because He and Wisdom, united in a embrace of love, have revealed with love's gentleness the secret of all truth. But under all its indescribable aspects it is the same ideal: it is God , it is the Father, from whose loving bosom comes the Holy Spirit bringing divine fruitfulness to the soul, to reproduce in it the master piece which is, Jesus the Lord.
How do we get filled with Spirit
How do we get filled with the Spirit? We have already say something about it in the previous chapter, but, let's recap a little bit since this is an important thing to understand, and since we will not find a clear set of instructions given to us in the Bible or the Catechism, that I could think about, let me give you what was given to me; we've said that we first should humble ourselves, then we should make a good examination of conscience, followed by a confession of all our sins, regardless of how small or big they are; we as good Catholic already know that we have been anointed with the Holy Spirit at baptism, but it has been as a down-payment or a start, and not as a one time thing or event.
That's why Our Lord tells us in (Luke 11:11) "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Yes Virginia, we must ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit, but, let's not forget that sin could prevent us from having the anointing of the Spirit, someone said that sin in our lives is similar to a big clog that prevents the water from running through a pipe, when we have our heart loaded with sin, we grieve the Holy Spirit and we are not allowed to poses Him.
So far we have in our list, humility, confession, repentance (which includes penitence) and asking The Lord to give us the Holy Spirit, but, we still have a couple of more things; let's talk about who is ruling our lives, is it self or Christ? If we say that Christ is our Lord, but do not make Him the center of our life, then we are not following Christ's recommendation in (Luke 9:23) “ If any one wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
We might be the only rulers of our lives, we seat up on our throne, and do not consider God for any of our decisions, we only seek our own desires and forget that St. Paul told us: (2 Corinthians 5:15) “And He died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.” Are you really willing to yield to Christ authority and rule in everything? Before you answer me, be honest and answer to yourself.
In summary, we should submit ourselves to God by confessing our sins and then yield to Him in everything and avoiding to sin, let's make Christ the master of our lives, as St Paul says in (Romans 6:13) “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God as those that are alive from the dead.”
If we notice in the previous verse of (Luke 9:23) the Lord recommends us to take up our cross daily, in other word, we should filled ourselves daily with the Holy Spirit, because as human beens, we are like sheep that wonder about constantly and need to be taken care of by its shepherd, St. Paul also reminds us of it in (Ephesians 5:18) “Be filled with the Spirit.” We complete this process of been filled with the Spirit with lot of prayer and faith in God; remember that even if we have faith as little as a mustard seed, we could move mountains and accomplish the impossible.
Read this article again, and you'll notice how clear the outline for being filled with the Spirit becomes to you.
Resumiendo, debemos de someternos a Dios, confesando nuestros pecados, y que sea El quien nos guíe en todo y evitando lo mas posible de no cometer pecado, hagamos que Cristo sea el Señor de nuestras vidas, a como san Pablo nos dice en: (Romanos 6:13) “Ni hagáis ya de vuestros miembros armas de injusticia al servicio del pecado; sino más bien ofreceos vosotros mismos a Dios como muertos retornados a la vida; y vuestros miembros, como armas de justicia al servicio de Dios.”
Si notamos bien en el versículo anterior de (Lucas 9:23) como el Señor nos recomienda te tomar nuestras cruces todos los días, es decir, que debemos que llenarnos a diario del Espíritu Santo, porque como seres humanos, somos semejantes a ovejas que constantemente deambulan en el peligro y tienen que ser protegidas por su pastor, de lo cual también San Pablo nos recuerda en (Efesios 5;18) “Llénense del Espíritu Santo.” Completamos este proceso de llenarnos con el Espíritu con mucha oración y mucha fe en Dios, recordando que si tenemos fe aunque sea del tamaño de un grano de arroz, podemos mover montañas y realizar lo imposible.
